On Your Mark. Get Set. Go!

Sitrin's STARS Program trains competitors for the Wheelchair Division of America’s largest 15K road race, The Boilermaker, as well as other races throughout the country. Sitrin is the proud sponsor of the Boilermaker Wheelchair Challenge, which awards customized racing chairs to athletes who complete the course in less than two hours and 15 minutes in a standard wheelchair.

Meet the 2013 Challenger!

Wheelchair Challenger Lay Aung is now the proud owner of a new racing wheelchair, valued at $2,500 after a successfully completing the 2013 Boilermaker.

Aung was born in Burma, came to Utica in November 2010 after living in a refugee camp in Thailand for 15 years.  Aung had normal physical development until the age of two, at which time, he lost his ability to stand and walk.  He was never medically treated until coming to the United States, where he was diagnosed with polio.

As the Wheelchair Challenger, Aung took on the Boilermaker 15k Road Race in a standard wheelchair.  The Challenge required him to complete the course in less than two hours and 15 minutes in order to be awarded a custom-fitted racing wheelchair through the generosity of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.  Aung completed this year’s race in 1:23:25!

After achieving his goal, Aung said “It was very exciting and I can’t wait to do it again next year in my new chair!”

“I am very proud of Lay’s accomplishment,” added Marc DePerno, director of Sitrin’s STARS (Success Through Adaptive Recreation and Sports) program.  “Completing the Challenge is the result of a significant amount of hard work and commitment, and I expect to see him competing in the Boilermaker for years to come.”

Aung’s custom racing wheelchair was donated by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.
