Those who have participated in Sitrin’s STARS program have accomplished a great deal in the course of its brief history. Here are some highlights:

Championships

STARS Athletes have competed at various World Wheelchair Curling Championships… 

  • In 2005, the national team (comprised of STARS athletes), competed in the 2005 World Wheelchair Championships in Braehead, Scotland.
  • In 2006, three Sitrin STARS took part in the Winter Paralympic Games in Torino, Italy.
  • In 2007, the national team (comprised of STARS athletes), competed in the 2007 World Wheelchair Championships in Soleftea, Sweden.
  • In 2008, the national team (comprised of STARS athletes), competed in the 2008 World Wheelchair Championships in Sursee, Switzerland.
  • In 2009, the national team (comprised of STARS athletes), participated in the 2009 World Wheelchair Championships in Vancouver, B.C.
  • In 2010, the national team (comprised of STARS athletes), participated in the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C.
  • In 2011, the national team (comprised of STARS athletes), competed in the 2011 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.
  • In 2012, the national team (comprised of STARS athletes), competed in the 2012 World Championships in Chuncheon, South Korea.
  • In 2013, the national team (comprised of STARS athletes), competed in the 2013 World Championships in Sochi, Russia.
  • In 2014, the national team (comprised of STARS athletes), competed in the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
  • In 2015, the national team (comprised of STARS athletes), competed in the 2015 World Champtionships in Lohja, Finland. 
  • In 2016, the national team (comprised of STARS athletes), competed in the 2016 World Champtionships in Sursee, Switzerland.

Awards and Achievements

  • Sitrin STARS Director Marc DePerno was awarded the O.C. Tanner Inspiration Award, which honors individuals who worked behind the scenes to provide encouragement for Team USA at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver, B.C.
  • The 2010 U.S. Paralympic team, which is comprised entirely of STARS, competed in Vancouver at the Winter Paralympic Games.
  • On November 4 three members of Team USA appeared on NBC’s Today Show! Paralympians James Joseph, Augusto Perez, and Jacqui Kapinowski, shared their talents with a national audience as they provide a demonstration of wheelchair curling on the ice at Rockefeller Center. Their appearance marked the 100-day countdown to the 2010 Olympic Games.
  • Team USA wheelchair curling regularly participates in high performance camps at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center.
  • Team USA (all STARS members) won the gold medal at the 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010 U.S. Open International Wheelchair Curling Bonspiel.
  • Team USA member Jimmy “Jam” Joseph was honored in the New York State Capitol by Senator Joseph Griffo. Joseph was selected by Senator Griffo as the recipient of a New York State Senate Achievers’ Award and was honored in the New York State Capitol on May 6, 2008.
  • Sitrin STARS member Vincent Bevivino received the Excelsior Award for Excellence from New York State Assemblyman David Townsend. Bevivino was honored on Disability Awareness Day held on June 3, 2008 at the New York State Capitol.
  • In 2008, Sitrin was named a United States Paralympic Sport Club, which is a nationally recognized community-based program developed to involve youth and adults with physical and visual disabilities in sports and physical activity, regardless of skill level.
  • Hermin Garic won the Miami Marathon in the winter of 2014.
  • The 2014 U.S. Paralympic team, which is comprised entirely of STARS athletes, competed in Sochi, Russia at the Winter Paralympic Games.
  • Team USA (comprised of STARS athletes), won the gold medal at the 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2015 U.S. Open International Wheelchair Curling Bonspiels. 
  • Tammy Delano was selected to the U.S. Paralympic Shooting Team and will compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
