Six Sitrin STARS athletes will participate in the 2009 World Wheelchair Curling Trials to be held November 14 -16 at the Utica Curling Club, located on Clark Mills Road in Whitesboro. The trials are the first competition in a three step process to determine the 2009 United States Curling Team and the 2010 Paralympic Team.
Sitrin STARS athletes participating in this weekend’s trials include:
STARS members will be competing against each other, as well as against wheelchair athletes from Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, California, and Texas. The team selection process includes skill testing, drills, strategy, and game participation. The Player Selection Committee will make its selections by mid-December.
Additional upcoming curling events that will help determine the National and Paralympic Teams include: the Cathy Kerr Memorial Bonspiel, to be held November 28-30 in Ottawa, Canada; and the U.S. Open International, December 5-7, which will be held in Utica, New York.
In February, Team USA, comprised entirely of Sitrin STARS athletes, won the bronze medal at the 2008 World Wheelchair Curling Championships. This was the first time the United States Wheelchair Curling Team ever won a medal in the World Championships!
Sitrin STARS is an innovative adaptive sports and recreation program through the Sitrin Medical Rehabilitation Center. The program provides individuals with physical disabilities opportunities to lead full, active lives. Established in 2001, STARS offers a variety of adaptive sports including basketball, curling, golf, racing, paddling, and skiing.
The World Wheelchair Championships will be held in Vancouver, Canada, February 21-28, 2009.
