Sitrin STARS (Success Through Adaptive Sports) and Wheelchair Curling Team USA member, Augusto “Goose” Perez has been named male athlete of the year by the United States Curling Association (USCA). Perez is the first wheelchair athlete to be selected as the association's athlete of the year in any category! The Sitrin STARS Wheelchair Curling Program is a collaboration of the Utica Curling Club (UCC) and Sitrin Medical Rehabilitation Center.
"I would like to say that it should have been the Team of the Year award because the team success was the work of the five players, coach, and support staff," Perez said.
In February, Team USA won the bronze medal at the 2008 World Wheelchair Curling Championships. This was the first time the United States Wheelchair Curling Team ever won a medal in the World Championships! Wheelchair Curling Team USA is comprised entirely of Sitrin STARS athletes.
Perez has represented the United States at two world wheelchair championships, as well as the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games. He began participating in the sport just three years ago. In addition to wheelchair curling, Perez also competes in many of Sitrin’s other adaptive sports.
The Sitrin STARS/UCC Wheelchair Curling Program has produced national champions in each of the last four years.
