Sitrin STARS Participate in U.S. Open International Wheelchair Curling Bonspiel!

Five Sitrin STARS athletes will participate in the second annual U.S. Open International Wheelchair Curling Bonspiel to be held December 5 – 7, at the Utica Curling Club, located on Clark Mills Road in Whitesboro. Six teams from Great Britain, Canada, and the United States will be competing in the international competition. The U.S. Open is the final contest that helps determine the 2009 United States Curling Team and the 2010 Paralympic Team.

Other recent competitions that contribute to the selection of the National and Paralympic Teams include: the Cathy Kerr Memorial Bonspiel, held November 28-30 in Ottawa, Canada; and the 2009 World Wheelchair Curling Team Trials, held November 14 – 16, in Utica, NY. A combination of performance, skill testing, drills, strategy, and game participation also play a role in the selection process. The Player Selection Committee will make its final decision by mid-December. The World Wheelchair Championships will be held in Vancouver, Canada, February 21-28, 2009.

Sitrin STARS athletes participating in this weekend’s trials include:

  • Tammy Delano of Rome, New York
  • James Joseph of New Hartford, New York
  • Jacqui Kapinowski of Point Pleasant, New Jersey
  • Augusto Perez of East Syracuse, New York
  • James Pierce of North Syracuse, New York

Sitrin’s STARS athletes practice regularly at the Utica Curling Club. The Curling Club has been a strong supporter of the program and its athletes for several years.

The Sitrin STARS program is an innovative adaptive sports and recreation program. It provides individuals with physical disabilities opportunities to lead full, active lives. Established in 2001, the STARS program offers a variety of adaptive sports including basketball, curling, golf, racing, paddling, and skiing.

Media Note: The Awards Ceremony for the Bonspiel will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2008, at 3:30 p.m.
