Sitrin STARS Athlete Wins First Place in Honor America Days Road Race!
Sitrin STARS (Success Through Adaptive Recreation and Sports) athlete Vincent Bevivino took first place in the Wheelchair Division of the Roman Runners Annual Honor America Days Road Race on July 26. There were four participants in the division, and Bevivino finished first with a time of 20:27.
Last year, Bevivino trained for the Boilermaker 15K Wheelchair Challenge and won a racing wheelchair for his outstanding performance. He has been using the new chair to participate in other local road races, including the Honor America Days Road Race.
Born with spina bifida, Bevivino is determined to excel in life. He was excited to learn about the adaptive sports program at Sitrin, and now enjoys being physically active. Bevivino began by participating in adaptive basketball practices and soon became a leader of the team. Along with racing, he also participates in kayaking and curling activities.
"Vinny started participating in the adaptive sports program four years ago and took an immediate interest. I believe his interactions with the other STARS team members has changed his outlook on life, and has made him physically and mentally stronger,” said to Marc DePerno, Sitrin STARS Program Director.
Sitrin STARS is an innovative adaptive sports and recreation program that provides people with physical disabilities the opportunity to lead full and active lives. Established in 2001, STARS offers a variety of adaptive sports including basketball, curling, golf, racing, paddling, and skiing.
