Congressman Arcuri Honors Sitrin Veterans Group With Flag Presentation

NEW HARTFORD- Congressman Michael Arcuri today honored the Sitrin Veterans and Friends Group by presenting a flag that has flown over the United States Capitol.  Sitrin Child Care Center’s Preschool class also joined in the festivities by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and providing patriotic music.

Sitrin’s Veterans and Friends Group was started by Susan McVoy-Barnard, the daughter of Sitrin long-term care resident Bob McVoy.  He is a veteran of World War II, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.  McVoy was a Prisoner of War in Germany from December 17, 1944 until March 30, 1945, when he was able to escape.  He was awarded a Purple Heart Medal and two Bronze Battle Stars for his dedicated service to our country.  The Sitrin Group meets twice each month to share stories, watch documentaries, and listen to informational speakers from various veterans’ organizations.

"It is a true honor to be able to present this flag, flown over our nation’s capitol, to the men and women who have so bravely and selflessly served our country,” Congressman Arcuri said. “ The Sitrin Veterans and Friends Group is an outstanding example of community involvement and commitment to honor our veterans. I am deeply committed to providing for the diverse needs of our nations’ veterans and service members. In Congress, I have joined Republicans and Democrats to pass critical legislation that will help provide veterans and service members with the care they have earned and deserve.”

"This group is an excellent opportunity for the veterans at Sitrin to get together on common ground,” said McVoy-Barnard, Sitrin Veterans and Friends Group Coordinator.  “Being a World War II veteran is a huge part of my father’s personality and history, and his participation in this group allows him to speak to other men and women who have had similar experiences.”

Currently, 38 veterans resident at Sitrin’s long-term care facility; of those, twenty-three are active in the Sitrin Veterans and Friends Group.  Sitrin has veterans from World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the Korean War.
