Mike's Story

In his younger days, Mike Fanelli always had the need for speed. He loved time out on the open road, truck driving for Fanelli Express and Byrne Dairy, and traveling to new places.

He spent many a winter weekend hunting and snowmobile racing across Oneida Lake, acquiring multiple trophies along the way. Likewise, he loved vintage cars, restoring a beautiful 1930 Ford Model A for which he received an award and trophy from Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute.

Fanelli was also a family man. At home, he always made life comfortable for his wife, Donna, taking care of everything around the house. Together, they raised two beautiful daughters, and enjoyed spending time with their ever-growing family, including two sons-in-law and five grandchildren.

In 2010, Fanelli experienced a stroke during surgery that radically changed his life. He spent four months in the hospital, unable to talk or walk. Upon discharge, he utilized rehabilitation and at-home care. Though he improved slowly, he struggled with cognitive impairments, balance, communication, and aphasia. The once independent traveler, competitor, and provider had now become unable to fully care for himself.

With his wife still working, the two sought a facility close to home that they could depend on and that could provide Fanelli with progressive therapies. That’s when they decided to go to Sitrin. Fanelli was already familiar with the Medical Rehabilitation Center after having a great experience in inpatient rehab following his knee replacement. Thus, a few months after the stroke, he started physical and occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology at Sitrin.

Three days per week he participated in three therapy sessions. In physical therapy, he would focus on building strength by stationary cycling, lifting weights, and doing movement exercises. Occupational therapy helped him with everyday tasks, including shaving and dressing. During the speech sessions, he used repetition methods and exercises to build his vocal and communication skills, as well as enhance his language and understanding. Fanelli continuously progressed, increasing his cognizance, mobility, and self-care abilities.

Eventually, he reached a plateau in his treatment, but wasn’t ready to leave Sitrin. He then joined Sitrin’s Wellness & Aquatic Center, where he currently spends time week exercising in the fitness center and heated therapy pools. He also connects with activities he previously enjoyed by participating in adaptive shooting through Sitrin, and enjoying classic car shows with his wife.

Though life has slowed down, these outlets have given Fanelli the opportunity to continue the things he loves, while also gaining back his independence.
